Situated on the harbour front on the banks of the Berg River, in the heart of the Laaiplek fishing community, the South African Fisheries Museum tells the story of both the South African and Namibian fishing industry for the past 100 years.

The museum, officially opened its doors on 15 February 1992 by Dr. Nick Nachenius, has grown in size and in the range of its galleries to its present layout.

The museum illustrates all aspects of the fishing industry with in-depth displays of wooden boat building, fishing methods, fishing gear, sea life, whaling gear, laboratorial artifacts, fishing pioneers of yesterday and scale model displays.

The museum caters for both the individual visitor as well as school and touring groups.

Upon prior arrangement, tours to the nearby Laaiplek Slipway, Fishing Jetty and canning factory of Marine Products can be arranged, all of these activities are walking distance from the museum.

Find us adjacent to the Laaiplek Hotel, with the entrance via The Hotel in De Villiers Sreet, just before the entrance to the Harbour.
