"SOUTH WEST SNOWGOOSE" FOUNDERS
            ON THE NAMIBIAN COASTLINE

The 2018 fishing season has claimed it's first victim - the "South West Snowgoose", an formidable wooden crayfish vessel from Luderitz was lost in the early hours of Thursday morning 11 January 2018 after the vessel allegedly dragged her anchor and got washed out onto the rocks on the southern Namibian coastline during a crayfish trip. All crewmembers onboard were able to safely evacuate the vessel.

  DIS TIETIESBAAI! EN "SOUTHERN BELLE"
LAAT SAK HAAR KOP IN SKAAMTE...

With the 2017 fishing season now done and dusted, we look forward to the new year. As usual the large factory stern trawlers were out at sea over the festive season, most of them were seen in action on the trawling grounds off the Eastern Cape coastline. The smaller wetfish and freezer stern trawlers were seen arriving back at their various home ports several days before Christmas. Between Christmas and New Year we saw the arrival of two stern trawlers from Iceland and Ireland joining the proudest fishing in the world, namely the "Therney" for owners Sea Harvest and "Qavak" for owners Fishermen Fresh.

Over the festive period several tuna pole vessels and hake longline vessels were out at sea, taking full advantage of an abundance of fish. During 2017 the "Intersea 22", a steel hull tuna pole vessel was withdrawn from fishing, while two new GRP tuna pole vessels joined the fleet namely "Santa Cruz" and "Frenchy Maria".

During 2017 both Sea Harvest and Premier Fishing got listed on the JSE. Since then it was evident that these two companies were looking to expand business operations as the Sea Harvest Group has announced it has entered negotiations to buy the entire fishing business of Viking Fishing Holdings. If successful, it will mean that Sea Harvest will become the leading deep-sea fishing operator in South Africa - a position held by Irvin & Johnson ever since. Premier Fishing on their turn, has acquired a controlling 52.51% interest in Talhado Fishing Group, the largest squid player in this sector.

For the pelagic industry we expect another promising season - given the weather patterns experienced over the past two years. At the moment most canneries and reduction plants are still being overhauled after the pilchards, which mysteriously disappeared during the early part of the season, eventually made a late comeback as several boats were still fishing the week prior to Christmas in an attempt to fill their quotas. During 2017 both the "Oceana Viking" and "Wildekus" were withdrawn from the South African fishing fleet and transferred to the Oceana fleet working in Angola. The "Ukuloba" was the only new vessel to join the West Coast fleet, and her performance will be closely observed by pelagic fishermen during the 2018 pelagic season. Another GRP purse seiner for Gansbaai is currently under construction at Sachal, but is only likely to be ready for the 2019 season. During 2017 the Terrasan Group came out on top in a sale process for the Saldanha Group (formerly owned by the Silverman family), with the South African media reporting the purchase price at ZAR 460 million.

During 2017, two fishing vessels were lost at sea, while another five wooden vessels were scrapped. In total seven new fishing vessels were launched by West Coast boat builders. During September 2017 both Tallie Marine and Sachal have each launched their biggest GRP boat to date, the 100ft "Meka Bay" (Tallie Marine) and 80ft "Ukuloba" (Sachal). Another interesting development on the West Coast is the building of a 47ft steel hull vessel which is currently in progress. In total four new vessels are under construction along the West Coast at present. On the stocks at Louw & Halvorsen jnr, five scale models are currently under construction, which include four crayfish vessels and one lampara seiner. This scale model fleet will one day have to represent an forgotten fishing fleet who once sailed the waters around Southern Africa.

Trawler Heritage has already made a good start to the new year with an
500-photo update on the South African news page of all the latest news from around the coast over the past six weeks.

Until next time, stywe lyne en vol nette!

        CAPE DOCKS - 27 NOVEMBER 2017

"WILMA", WIE DE HEL IS "WILMA"? JOU
SKUIT SE NAAM IS MOS "OUMA"!
